Dimetrodon-Cynognathus

Before the dinosaurs were the dominant creature on Earth there were lizards like Dimetrodon who ruled the land. A major extinction that happened between the Permian and Triassic periods, wiped out many of the land animals and drastically changed the habitat. The surviving descendants of Dimetrodon evolved to be smaller and started to develop “mammal-like” features which helped protect them against the new kings of the Earth, the dinosaurs.

Yinlong-Styracosaurus

Everyone loves Triceratops! Well Triceratops has many cool cousins who also lived during the Cretaceous period. One of those is Styracosaurus who is also a rhinoceros-like, plant eating dinosaur with a huge horn at the end of its nose. Most of these animals lived in what is now North America. But where did this family of dino favorites come from? Well it seems they may have had their origin in China with a small dinosaur called Yinlong 85 million years earlier.

Pakicetus-Squalodon

Whales and dolphins look like fish. But they are mammals like us and evolved from a family of land mammals, such as Pakicetus, to find a home in the sea. What is amazing is that these swimming mammals look almost exactly like fish, with fins and a tail. That means that the body design for sea creatures has evolved multiple times as some creatures returned to the water for food or to escape predators.

    Microbe Finds Arsenic Tasty; Redefines Life


    New Microbe Samples

    NASA scientists have discovered an amazing new life-form that redefines what we consider to be the basic building blocks of life.

    A microbe found at the bottom of Mono Lake in California seems able to live in a solution of arsenic which is poisonous to most other life.  Phosphorus, which used to be considered one of the essential building blocks of life, is replaced by arsenic in this organism.

    Dr. Sasselov, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and director of an institute on the origins of life there said, “I would like to know, when designing experiments and instruments to look for life [on other planets], whether I should be looking for same stuff as here on Earth, or whether there are other options.  Are we going to look for same molecules we love and know here, or broaden our search?”

    Seems like we have aliens right here on earth!!!
